Q1. What have been your greatest successes (physically, mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?
Martha: Physically I would say getting consistent with working out. I have struggled so much with being active as I never was an athlete of any kind. Mentally my biggest success was realizing that I can get stronger and I just need to be patient. Compared to when I first started, I find it easier to do more exercises. In the last month, I ran faster than before and I can move heavier weights.
Marc: Especially since I started working out more consistently and with intention, I have been able to overcome some previous limitations. After injuring my knee shortly before coming to the US, the guidance and reassurance from coaches and fellow athletes has given me back a lot of my confidence in my body. Some of the extra help I was able to get from coaches has also helped improve my shoulder mobility and strength — which has been a lifelong problem of mine.
I’d like to believe that the training has also contributed to my ability — and willingness — to push through challenging times and trust the process.
Q2. How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training? Has CrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life?
Martha: I have lost the weight that I have been wanting to lose in the last five years. CrossFit had a big impact on that. Yes, I feel CrossFit has transferred into my eating habits. I definitely eat healthier now.
Marc: CrossFit has made a significant impact in so many ways. I definitely pay more attention to the food I eat, how much liquid I drink, how much sleep I get. Last year’s challenge around these topics was such a valuable lesson that I have tried to carry forward since. It made me realize how all these aspects of my lifestyle not only affect my physical performance but also my well-being — physically and emotionally — and the energy I can bring to the table in all the areas of my life.
Also, sadly I have to admit that I am terribly impatient. But having coaches guide me through a safe way to progress in this sport, and also having the opportunity to look at actual metrics of where these 2 years have gotten me is a powerful reminder how far you can get if you just keep chipping away and keep being consistent.
Q3. What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?
Martha: For me, the biggest advantages are the classes and the help of the coaches. Before, I used to work out on my own and would lose motivation. Having the classes makes it easier for me to go to the gym and the coaches are all very helpful in making sure I do the exercises correctly.
Marc: I previously played team handball for 20+ years and thought it covered a lot of bases already. But to me, CrossFit even more so excels through its well-roundedness. Crossfit offers such a great variety of endurance, strength, explosiveness, coordination, and gymnastic skills. I feel like it is giving me a better sense of understanding my body and its abilities — and its limitations.
On top of that, I have a deep appreciation for the CrossFit community. There seems to be a rather unique balance between friendly competition and mutual support. And because CrossFit can affect so many areas of one’s lifestyle, I am thankful to have such a rich environment to tap into for advice.
Q4. What advice can you give to others?
Martha: Smile. Learn to be optimistic and don’t dwell on the past.
Marc: Keep in mind that progress is a slow process. Don’t expect results overnight and be patient, because even the longest journey begins with the first step. Also, there’s always something to learn, so don’t be afraid to ask questions. And don’t focus too much on numbers, on the scale, or the bars, on the whiteboards.
Athlete Specific Q.
1) Marc, whats better Oktoberfest or Halloween? and Why?
Given that I am from the North of Germany, Bavarian culture and things like the Oktoberfest haven’t really played a role in my life until I lived outside Germany and people naturally associated it with me. On the other hand, Halloween always felt way more inclusive and fun to me. Dressing up, having a fun time at all ages — what’s not to love about that? So, Halloween for me.
2) Marc, you took second place in last year’s Halloween costume contest, can we expect a comeback and do you think you have what it takes to win this year?
I hope I can come up with something good this year and have a good time again. Admittedly, last year was mostly a happy accident as far as costumes go, so I don’t exactly have much of a plan for these things. Who knows how I’ll do.
1) Martha, what’s better Oktoberfest or Halloween? and Why?
Even though I participate in Halloween festivities and drink plenty of German biers, I have to say Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is better. This day means a lot to me because of my Mexican heritage. It is a day we remember those who have left before us.
2) Martha, does Marc have what it takes to win this year?
YES!!!
3) Martha, does Marc have more shoes than you?
We actually counted and nope, it turns out I have more shoes.
