Our Mission

To help our community, athletes, and friends reach their ultimate fitness potential by providing a welcoming atmosphere that inspires accountability and success.

Our athlete to coach ratio allows us to focus on everyone of our clients in order to help them set S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) goals and achieve them. CrossFit is a complete fitness program that allows us to improve upon all faucets of fitness including cardiovascular health, strength, stamina, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy simultaneously. Most other programs focus on one or two of these at a time, which results in slower adaptations. CrossFit puts physical demands on the entire body every workout to provide results, and equally as important it tests your mental toughness. Each workout you will be able to push just a little bit harder or go for just a little bit longer, leaving you completely exhausted, satisfied and accomplished.

If you are serious about making permanent changes to improve your fitness then CrossFit DNR is the place for you. We as a community strive for success and thrive towards our goals as a family that encourages nothing less than your absolute best effor

Our story

CrossFit DNR was founded by brothers, Kody and Kyle Knapp in 2013 after spending three years training and coaching clients in their garage.

Both brothers spent the majority of their childhood involved in sports, exercise, and fitness. While they excelled in these aspects of their lives, they noticed as they got older more and more of their friends and family were unable to partake in many of the same activities, so they set out on an adventure to help people reach their fitness potential and enjoy life as much as they could! In 2009 they were introduced to their first CrossFit workout “The Filthy Fifty” and immediately knew that CrossFit was the best way for them to help the most people possible reach their goals. Since that first workout Kody, Kyle and the entire CrossFit DNR family have become part of the friendly, encouraging and welcoming CrossFit community.

CrossFit Do Not Retreat is the perfect place for everyone looking to investigate the CrossFit craze, whether you are just starting on your journey to a healthier, happier life or you are a professional athlete. You will be welcomed as part of the DNR family as soon as you walk into the facility.

I Co-Own CrossFit DNR with my brother, Kody. I graduated from CSU in 2012 with a B.S in Health and Exercise Sciences where I was a Personal Trainer at the rec center. I started doing CrossFit in 2009. Since I was 16, I dreamed of being an elite trainer and opening a gym. Kody and I started chasing this dream while I was still in college. In 2010 we began training athletes out of his garage and officially opened CrossFit DNR in 2013.

My favorite movements in CrossFit tend to be anything related to gymnastics. I have a passion for CrossFit and I enjoy the process of becoming a well-rounded athlete, however, my true joy is watching the progress of the athletes who come through the door. I am confident, and pride myself on being a top-level coach. The term coach, goes far beyond just technique though. I believe everything begins with mindset. The difference between setting goals and achieving them is optimism, and understanding that it does not matter where we start our journey. Constant evaluation of where we started, and celebration of the small victories will breed long-term success.

“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real but fear is a choice.”

Co-owner of CrossFit DNR married to the beautiful Dr. Vanessa Knapp, Father to 2 amazing canine kids (Liberty and Klyde) and standing in at 5’8″ 185lbs of pure BOOMSHAKALKA! But it wasn’t always this way. Back before 2009 CrossFit, Sharks, Bigfoot, Rock crawling, Aliens, Heights, Running, Kids, Zombies and Monsters alike, Spiders, and Raw Chicken Scared the crap out of me! So I did what any reasonable human bean would do. I Ran and I mean fast…. Haha YEAH Right, running… like thats going to happen I just told you running scares the crap out of me! So rather than running from my fears, I researched them, got familiar with them. Starting with getting my CFL 1 in April of 2009 and that alone has helped me confront my fears and meet them head on. Now I am not saying that I am not afraid of sharks, Bigfoot ect. but thanks to Crossfit and a great training team, I am more prepared if a time ever arises where I come face to face with one of them. And its My goal everyday to bring out the best in every athlete that comes through our doors and I expect my athletes to give me there best, every time they step foot in our box. So at the end of the day, you can without a doubt, look your own monster/fears in the face and tell them you’ve paid your dues, your stronger than yesterday and your not afraid to take them on.

CrossFit DNR has been more than just a place to coach and more than an outlet to workout; CrossFit DNR has become my home away from home. When I was introduced to DNR back in June 2013, I immediately knew that this was more than just a gym. The coaches that I have the pleasure to work with, and the athletes that I have the pleasure to train, have changed my life in more ways than one. I take pride in coaching my 5:30 am class, along with the others, and getting to know the athletes on more than a trainer/client basis. I understand what they like, I understand what they don’t like, and I understand how to push them to reach the goals that THEY came in to this gym looking for.

I am a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and have been since January of 2014. I have been actively involved in sports my entire life, from Track and Field, Tennis, and Baseball; along with plenty of other types of physical activity. I have learned through practice and repetition, how to be the most beneficial coach I can be. After starting CrossFit, I have noticed improvement in every aspect of my life, not only physically, but mentally as well. It has changed how I look at what I am capable of and I am pleased to share this with the variety of athletes that come into CrossFit DNR.

Hello Hooligans! My name is Bre and I stand at a towering 5’0”. I’m a Colorado native and a Colorado State University alumni. My Bachelor’s degree is in Health and Exercise Science. I played 3 years of collegiate ice hockey while at CSU. I wear many hats in my life and I’m always busy. I am currently the Operations Manager for the Northern Colorado Eagles Junior A ice hockey team in Greeley, Colorado and the Marketing Coordinator for Certified Orthopedics. I am also completing my Post-Bac teaching license in K-12 Physical Education and Master’s in Sport Pedagogy at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. Once I complete my program in May 2019, I will be looking to teach middle school Health and Physical Education starting in Fall 2019.

After completing my collegiate ice hockey career, I found CrossFit DNR (formerly Retribution Strength) back in May 2013 at Kody Knapp’s garage and I haven’t looked back since. I have a genuine fear of having to move away from this gym and this community one day.

My favorite movements are pull-ups, handstand push-ups, and sit-ups. I really hate anything that requires me to be tall like rowing and wall-balls. You’ll never way to find another gym after being a CrossFit DNR Hooligan!

I am a Fort Collins native and a Colorado State University (CSU) graduate. After finishing my undergraduate degree in French, I went on to purse my master’s in education at CSU to become a secondary education French and Spanish teacher. I currently teach Spanish at Rocky Mountain High School.

I’ve always been involved in and passionate about fitness in some form or another. I trained in classical ballet for about ten years, and I also competed on the national level in the sport of acrobatic gymnastics for twelve years. I taught children’s gymnastics at Mountain Center for many years before moving to France for a year.

Some time after “retiring” from acrobatics, I found CrossFit, which filled a void in my life in many ways. The transition from throwing around people to throwing around weights was a natural one for me, and I fell in love with how CrossFit combines so many elements of fitness. I appreciate how well-rounded CrossFit forces one to be, and I also love the close-knit community aspect of it. I can’t imagine what I would be doing if I hadn’t discovered CrossFit DNR on CSU’s plaza!

I completed my CF-L1 in July of 2016 and am eager to continue my fitness and CrossFit education!  I look forward to helping people improve their fitness, their mental and physical strength, and the way they move and feel!

I am very enthusiastic about fitness, starting very young I tried to mimic my childhood hero, Mary Lou Retton while participating in gymnastics for 10 years. I have always stayed active, but in college I got into running trail and road for varied distances. This love for running turned into longer competitive runs after I moved to Colorado, competing in multiple half marathons and finishing my first full marathon last year. I have coupled my love for running into cross training in swimming and biking to compete in multiple triathlons in recent years. This cross training and variety in training led me to explore how CrossFit could benefit me in other competitive arenas, like obstacle races. Cross training has given me the complete fitness to compete at a higher level and do things I couldn’t have done before. I wanted to share this experience with young people which led me to get my CFL1 in September 2015 and help develop the KidFit program at CrossFit DNR. After the first class I felt that I was showing the kids what functional movements and motivation can do in their hearts and lives. Bringing them to be better people and appreciate fitness for the health and mental benefits it can bring them as they grow.

Hello fellow athletes! So although it’s no longer obvious, I am actually originally from England, I have moved around a lot throughout my life and somehow ended up in Fort Collins back in June 2017.  Growing up, I was never particularly athletic, unfortunately there isn’t a lot of sports available for girls at school in England.  Instead I was very interested in cooking and baking, so I decided to explore the culinary arts after finishing High School.  I am still very interested in cooking and food, and I spend a lot of my free time learning about nutrition.

I was introduced to CrossFit at the end of 2014 and instantly loved it!  I had spent the year before going to your everyday average “Globo Gym” and had grown tired of the same old workouts and anti-social attitude there, CrossFit was exactly what I needed.  I ended up taking my CF-L1 in May 2015; as soon as I started doing CrossFit and felt the positive affects it had on my life, I knew that I wanted to be able to help people realize and achieve their mental and physical goals… Coaching CrossFit seemed like a great way to do that.

I definitely enjoy the gymnastics side of CrossFit a little more than the rest, being a gymnast was my childhood dream, so now I get to live a little bit of that dream every day.  Over the summer of 2017 I went down to CrossFit Roots to complete the CrossFit Gymnastics specialty course which was super informative and a lot of fun!

Other than CrossFit, I have trained in both aerial silks and Lyra, enjoy doing yoga and generally just love being active, outdoors and trying new sports!

CSU alum with a B.S. in Health and Exercise Sciences. Having a strong background and a lot of experience in the Strength and Conditioning world I decided to branch out a little and try CrossFit for a month to see what it was all about. After my first session I was already in love. I came in expecting to not like it, boy was I wrong. A big part of CrossFit is the community in the gym, and I can confidently say our community is the weirdest & best community out there. Being a Hooligan is a point of pride in our gym.

I am almost finished with my Post-Bacc teaching licensure to become a P.E. teacher where my goal is to help our future generations become healthier so they can enjoy the world and never have their health be a barrier.

I used to be pretty closed minded and judgmental, after starting CrossFit this all changed. It has help me improve myself physically, and more importantly, mentally. My fiance and I are proud parents of our beloved pupper named Finn. If I’m not in the gym there’s a good chance you can catch me on a mountain either hiking, snowboarding, or mountain biking. I love to adventure and go a little crazy when kept indoors too long. My favorite aspects of CrossFit are olympic lifting, jumping of any kind (the higher the better), and pull-ups.
