Chandler Smith (IG/Blacksmifff): In direct opposition to the previous photos for this year’s Open, the meaning of this picture is crystal clear. Now initially we could think that the answer to today’s workout lies in simple numerology tied to the freezing temperature of water. This of course, is textbook misdirection. We all know that Dave is a fan of classical literature, and the nine distinctive blocks of ice in this picture are clearly a call out to Kurt Vonnegut’s 1963 novel “Cat’s Cradle,” in which the substance “Ice 9” features prominently. According to our research (Wikipedia), (Ice) IX is a form of solid water stable at temperatures below 140 K and pressures between 200 and 400 mPA. From this we can ascertain that the total amount of reps for our movements will equal 140. We know that there are three atoms in a water molecule, which tells us that there will be three movements in the metcon. Unfortunately for us, these three movements are obviously (3×3=Ice Nine) of pull-ups, toes to bar, and thrusters. And what of the 200/400? Considering Castro’s penchant for urging on the general fitness population, it is clear that these numbers are meant to represent the goal weights for the max ground to overhead part of the workout. Ice try Dave, see you next year! #21point3
